How to add shoppable video to a Shopify store

The mechanics are simpler than most merchants expect, and the order matters more than the speed. Here is the sequence that gets a working, shoppable video on a live store, and the decision to make at each step.

1. Get the videos in

You have two sources and there is no reason to prefer one. Upload from your device, or import a reel by pasting its link — nothing needs re-uploading by hand, and the imported copy keeps its own quality rather than being a screen recording.

The decision here is which videos, not how many. Start with the products you already sell well. Video will not rescue a product nobody wants; it will noticeably lift one people are already considering.

2. Group them into a playlist

A playlist is the set of videos a widget shows. The instinct is to make one playlist with everything in it, and it is the wrong instinct — you will immediately want the home page showing something different from the product page.

A workable starting structure:

  • One playlist per collection you actively merchandise
  • One for the home page — your best few, regardless of category
  • One per campaign, created and retired with the campaign

3. Tag the products

This is the step that turns video into shoppable video, and it is the one most often rushed. Open a video, search your catalogue, attach what it shows.

Two things to get right. First, tag what is actually in frame — a video tagged with six products the shopper cannot see reads as advertising, and they treat it as advertising. Second, where the video shows a specific version of something, tag that variant rather than the parent product. A shopper who watched thirty seconds of the olive one should not land on a colour picker set to black.

4. Turn the app embed on

One toggle in your theme. Until it is on, nothing renders on the storefront no matter how much you have configured — which is the single most common reason a first setup appears not to work. It is a master switch, you flip it once, and you leave it on.

5. Place a widget

In the Shopify theme editor, add the widget where you want it and save. It is a theme app block, which means three useful things: you place it by dragging rather than by editing a file, you can remove it the same way, and uninstalling the app later leaves your theme exactly as it was. Nothing is written into your theme’s code at any point.

Choose the layout to fit the slot rather than the other way around. A carousel suits a narrow band between sections. A grid suits a page that is mostly video. A stories row suits the top of a home page. A floating bubble suits a store that wants video available everywhere without giving it a section.

6. Check it on a phone

Not the desktop preview — an actual phone, on an actual connection. Most of your video traffic is mobile, and mobile is where the mistakes show: a grid that is three-across on a desktop and unreadable at 375 pixels, a card whose text is clipped, a popup whose product details have been pushed below the fold.

What you do not have to do

  • Edit theme files. There is nothing to paste into theme.liquid, and no snippet to install.
  • Configure colours to start. The widget reads your theme’s own colours and fonts and arrives looking like the rest of the page. Customise afterwards, if you want to.
  • Re-encode your videos. They are processed on upload and served from Shopify’s CDN.
  • Hire anyone. If a step needs a developer, that is a bug in the step.

A reasonable first week

Five to ten videos, one playlist, one placement, tagged properly. Watch what happens for a week before adding more. The temptation is to fill every page on day one; the stores that get the most out of video are usually the ones that learned which placement worked before scaling it.

Shoppable video isn't video with a link under it. It's video a shopper buys from without leaving the page — here's the difference, and why it matters.
