When video doesn’t work — and it’s not the video

“We tried video and it did not move anything.” Usually true, and usually caused by something that has nothing to do with the footage. Work down this list before commissioning anything.

1. Nothing was tagged

Check first, always. The videos play, the section looks right, and there is no way to buy anything from it. This is the most common cause by a wide margin, and it is invisible because everything renders correctly.

2. Nobody saw it

A section below the fold on a long page, on a template that gets little traffic. Before concluding video does not work, check how many people the video reached — the answer is sometimes a few dozen.

A video that nobody saw has not been tested.

3. The page has a different problem

Video will not fix a product page with no reviews, unclear shipping costs, or a checkout that asks for an account. It amplifies a page that works; it does not repair one that does not.

If your conversion problem is trust or friction, video is not where the next win is.

4. It is on the wrong page for the shopper's stage

Discovery content on a product page widens a decision that had narrowed. Single-product content on a home page tells a new visitor you sell one thing. Right video, wrong moment.

5. It made the page slower

If adding video cost you a second of load time, the video has to earn that second back before it earns anything. Measure before and after; occasionally the honest answer is that the section is net negative and the fix is technical.

6. The measurement is wrong

Last on the list and worth checking, because it is embarrassing to rebuild something that was working. If you are reading plays, you are reading a traffic number. If you are comparing this month to last month, you are reading seasonality.

Look at attributed orders from video against a comparable period, split by device, before deciding nothing happened.

When it genuinely is the video

It happens, and it has a signature: high interaction, low add-to-cart. People are opening it and not buying. That means the video is interesting and is not making anyone want the product — usually because it is about the brand rather than about the thing.

That is a content fix, and it is the only case on this page where making a better video is the right response.
