Product page SEO when the page has video on it

Product pages are the hardest pages on a store to make distinctive, because most of them are variations of each other and many carry the manufacturer’s description verbatim. Video helps, but only if the rest of the page is doing its job.

Video does not replace the text

The most common mistake: adding video and treating the description as decoration. A search engine cannot watch the video, so a page with rich video and a two-line description looks thin — and thin is exactly the problem video was supposed to solve.

Video and text answer different questions. The text is what gets the page found; the video is what converts the person who arrives.

What to write when there is video

Write the things the video shows but cannot be read. Materials and measurements. Care and compatibility. What it is for and who it is not for.

A useful habit: write a sentence near the video that describes what it shows. “The linen shirt worn and moved in, showing how it falls at the shoulder.” It helps a search engine, it helps somebody who cannot watch it, and it takes thirty seconds.

The duplicate content trap

Stores with many similar products often reuse one video across a whole range, with the same name and description everywhere. Now twenty pages carry identical markup for what a search engine reads as the same video.

Either vary the name and description per page so each is about that product, or accept that the video is generic and lean on the page’s own text to differentiate. What does not work is twenty pages claiming a unique video that is the same file with the same title.

One structured-data graph, not three

A product page with video wants Product markup, VideoObject markup and a breadcrumb trail. Emitting them as three separate blocks, each repeating the organisation, gives a crawler three partial descriptions to reconcile.

One graph with the nodes cross-referenced is cleaner, smaller and less likely to contradict itself when someone changes a template.

Variants and canonicals

Shopify will happily serve the same product at several URLs — with a variant parameter, through a collection path. Make sure the canonical points at the one you want ranked, and that the video markup is on that URL rather than only on a variant.

The realistic ambition

Most product pages will not rank for generic category terms; that is a job for collection pages and content. What a good product page with video can do is own its own name, own the long-tail questions about it, and convert the traffic that arrives from everywhere else considerably better.
