Your social videos are an SEO asset you aren’t using

Social video has a brutal half-life. A Reel does most of its work in the first two days and is effectively invisible within a week, regardless of how good it was.

The same file on a product page, with text around it and markup describing it, is a permanent asset that accumulates. It is the same thirty seconds of footage doing a completely different job.

Why the transfer works

Social platforms rank by recency and engagement velocity. Search ranks by relevance and authority, which do not decay on the same clock. A video that is dead on Instagram can be the most useful thing on a page that gets found for years.

You are not reposting. You are moving an asset from a system that discards it to one that compounds it.

What to bring over

Not everything. Filter for videos that answer a question a searcher would type.

  • Product in use. Maps directly onto “how does X work” and “what does X look like”.
  • Comparison and sizing. Maps onto the comparison queries that convert best.
  • How-to and care. Maps onto post-purchase searches, which bring people back to your site.
  • Not: trend audio, memes, announcements, anything needing the caption or the comments to make sense.

What has to happen after the import

Importing alone achieves very little. Three things make it an SEO asset:

  1. Put it on a page with matching text. The video and the words should be about the same thing. A video about fit on a page about materials helps neither.
  2. Make sure it has structured data. A name, a description, a thumbnail, a date. Without it, the video is invisible to a search engine.
  3. Write a real description. Not the Instagram caption, which is written for a different context and usually includes hashtags, an emoji and a call to follow.

The caption problem

Social captions travel badly. They assume the feed, they assume the sound, and they are written to drive engagement rather than to explain. Rewrite for the page: what is shown, which product, what question it answers.

This is also the text a search engine reads to understand the video, so it is worth more than the two minutes it takes.

Keeping them alive

Imported social video has one durable failure mode: source links expire, and a library that was fine in March is a wall of blank cards in June. Whatever you use to import should be re-checking and refreshing those links, because an SEO asset that quietly stops loading is worse than one you never built.

The compounding bit

Do this for a year and the difference is stark. A store that posts and forgets has an empty product page and a feed nobody scrolls back through. A store that moves its best work onto pages has a library where every video is findable, taggable and still working.
