Video SEO for Shopify stores: what actually moves

Video SEO has an unhelpful amount of mystique around it. In practice it is a small number of concrete things, most of which are about making a video legible to software that cannot watch it.

The core problem

A search engine cannot see your video. It cannot tell that the thirty seconds on your product page shows a linen shirt being worn, any more than it can tell what is in a photograph without help.

Everything in video SEO is a way of telling it, in a form it can read.

1. Structured data, which is most of it

VideoObject markup describes the video in machine-readable terms: its name, its description, a thumbnail, how long it is, when it was uploaded, where the file is.

Without it, a search engine has a page with an opaque blob on it. With it, the page is eligible for video results — the ones with a thumbnail and a duration that occupy considerably more space than a text result.

The critical word is eligible. Markup does not grant a position. It removes the reason you could not have one.

2. The markup has to match the page

This is where sites get themselves into trouble. Markup describing a video that is not on the page, or is behind an interaction, or has been removed, is a mismatch — and mismatches are what manual actions are issued for.

The safe approach is to generate the markup from the videos the page actually renders, so it cannot describe something that is not there. Hand-maintained markup drifts the first time someone changes a page and does not update the JSON.

3. Text near the video

Deeply unglamorous and consistently effective. A heading, a caption, a paragraph that says what the video shows. Search engines read the surrounding content to understand what a page is about, and a video floating in an otherwise empty section tells them nothing.

4. Thumbnails

The thumbnail is what appears in the result, and it is the entire click-through decision. A dark frame, a motion-blurred one, or a frame of a logo will be shown to people and ignored by them.

Pick a frame where the product is clearly visible and well lit. It is a two-minute job that affects every impression the result ever gets.

5. Page speed, indirectly

Speed is a ranking factor, modestly. More practically, a slow page is one people bounce from, and a video-heavy page loaded carelessly is a slow page. The speed work and the SEO work are the same work here.

What nobody can promise

Rankings. Any app or agency that promises a position for a search term is either misunderstanding or misrepresenting. What is deliverable is eligibility, accuracy and speed — the removal of every reason not to rank. What happens after that is competition.

A realistic order of work

  1. Get structured data onto every page with a video, generated from the page.
  2. Fix the thumbnails on your ten most important videos.
  3. Write a real sentence next to each one.
  4. Check the pages are fast.
  5. Then look at anything more elaborate.
